All courses are subject to minimum enrolment. We advise that participants do not finalize any travel arrangements until notified that this course is confirmed.
This course provides a practical and experiential introduction to the history, methodology, planning and assessment of local outdoor and experiential learning opportunities.
During this course, students will:
- Develop an understanding of the history and theoretical underpinnings of OEE.
- Learn basic elements around planning, teaching and assessing safe and pedagogical OEE learning experiences, including field and over-night outings.
- Situate the importance of risk (assessment and management) and safety within the context of OEE experiences.
- Explore interdisciplinary connections between curriculum, educational organizations and OEE.
- Foster skills to assist in promoting personal, social and environmental responsibility through OEE (including individual differences, backgrounds, interests, needs and abilities of learners).
- Create collegial networks towards a supportive OEE learning community that extends beyond the course.
- Contemplate/develop connections between OEE and methods of facilitating sustainable ways of living and learning.
UBC Outdoor Environmental Education (OEE) courses support educators to facilitate outdoor learning experiences that enhance their students’ personal knowledge and connections to the natural world.
Please note the following details for this summer offering:
- The course is delivered primarily outdoors – students must be prepared with appropriate gear and a reasonable level of fitness.
- If you have a condition that may limit full participation in the course, please contact Hart Banack prior to registering.
- Risks generally associated with outdoor activities are inherent in this course (eg. hiking, canoeing, kayaking, camping).
- Please contact Hart Banack in advance if you have questions or concerns.
- Your registration and participation in the course requires a signed Assumption of Risk document outlining the activities and related risks involved – see the Registration & Fees tab for fillable forms.
Students enrolled in these courses should be aware of the following conditions:
- Overnight out-trip is compulsory of the course – confirm dates before registering. Attendance is mandatory.
- Additional field trip and equipment rental fees apply.
- Courses occur primarily in the outdoors, be prepared with appropriate gear and fitness levels.
- Risks generally associated with outdoor activities are inherent in this course. Please inquire in advance if you have questions or concerns. Your registration implies acknowledgement and acceptance of such risk. Risk related forms will be provided to you with the course outline. You will be required to return these on the first in-person meeting day.
- Students will be required to pay $75.00 to participate on course out-trips. The details regarding the participation fee payment will be provided by the senior program assistant. The payment must be paid online, and shall be receipted. Course fees vary based on the costs of the diverse field experiences, and students will be provided with a cost break-down for these additional fees, if one is requested.

This summer institute is a required course for the OEE Diploma, and can therefore be applied towards the UBC Diploma in Education – Outdoor Environmental Education program.
This is a customized diploma program wherein each student selects a cluster of courses from thematic areas integral to OEE - Environmental, Indigenous Studies, Healthy Living, and Outdoor & Skills.
Hart Banack
I am rather passionate about outdoor education, and I am attempting to live more ‘locally’ (whatever that might mean), and explore this in my approach to outdoor education. I know myself to be an educator, philosopher, poet, and fierce advocate by nature. I hold a BC teaching certificate from SFU, and have taught with various age groups and in distinct educational settings, including pre-school, elementary school, high school, post-secondary school, and with adults and seniors.
My educational pursuits also include a Master’s (Diversity in Curriculum and Instruction) and a Doctorate in Education (Curriculum Theory and Implementation), both from SFU. I am also involved with the Wild About Vancouver (WAV) Outdoor Education Festival and exploring ways that in/non/formal educators can help increase outdoor learning and time spent outdoors during instructional periods.
I have enjoyed participating in experiences with some fairly radical work teams, which have significantly (in)formed my “ways” of teamwork and learning. I am rather open to diversity, difference, and making meaning through sharing and participation. I have learned that outdoor quests are not about the summit, but rather the journey.

UBC Student Registration
To register in the course for credit, students must be admitted to the UBC Faculty of Education (Vancouver campus); please see "Admission to UBC" below. Once admitted, students may register in the credit course.
Current UBC students can register for credit courses through the Student Service Centre, using their Campus Wide Login (CWL).
Registration opens in early March, see the Summer Session dates for the opening registration date for your student category. Many summer programs fill quickly, early registration is strongly recommended.

EDCP 323 96A | Outdoor Environmental Education: Curriculum and Pedagogy
The for-credit seats are restricted to Home Economics students in the Faculty of Education.

Credit tuition is calculated on a per-credit basis. Tuition fees are in Canadian dollars and are reviewed annually by the UBC Board of Governors.

Visiting Graduate Students
Visiting graduate students who wish to take credit courses must register for those courses and will be assessed tuition fees at the prevailing graduate per credit rate, plus authorized student fees.
Tuition fees are subject to review by The University of British Columbia. The Western Deans Agreement does not apply to this course.
Student Assessed Fees
Certain additional fees apply to students who take courses on campus.
Students who meet certain requirements may opt out of the U-Pass and AMS Extended Health and Dental Plan, during the first two weeks of the term.
To see if you qualify for the U-Pass fee exemption, read the U-Pass FAQ information.
If you think you qualify for an exemption, login to the Student Service Centre (SSC) and click on the Financial Summary tab to navigate to the U-Pass fee exemption page.
If you already have medical/dental coverage (other than BC MSP), you may be able to apply for an exemption if you meet certain requirements and follow the opt-out procedures. Visit the Student Service Centre (SSC) for more information.
Students registered in on-campus courses in the summer session are not assessed Health/Dental Plan fees.
Tuition Fee Certificates

Visiting Graduate Students
To be eligible for admission as a Visiting Graduate Student to UBC, you must be currently registered in a graduate program with good standing at the home university.

All participants in this course are required to pay the participation fee to cover the costs for site rental, canoe rental, canoe instruction, special guests, and canoe certificate.
